There will be times that orchids will close, but they will eventually bloom, given the right time and care. However, there will be times orchids that will have a hard time opening again. There are many things you should check to pinpoint the reason why your orchids aren’t blooming. Understanding proper care and its physiology is the key to ensure your orchids will continue to bloom and flourish.

Understanding Orchids

Understanding orchids is essential to helping them grow again. When you go to order orchids online, you will see that there are several types of orchids. Some of them are more expensive, and some are easy to grow. Some of them are tropical, and some are not. The different types can be grouped into two types: tropical and subtropical. Tropical orchids tend to be greener than their counterparts in the subtropical zone.

One of the popular types of orchids in the tropical zone is the phalaenopsis orchid. This type blooms between two and four times per year, and the plants last for about three months. Other popular types of orchids include dendrobium, which blooms once per year and has flowers that last just over a week, and orchidium that bloom once a year. This type also has a very long-lasting flower. It is best to plant them away from too much direct sunlight.

Most species of orchids can handle regular watering, but it depends upon the species. If the water table is high, then the plants can suffer from a dry condition. You can give them at least an inch of water a week. Watering should be done when the leaves start to turn yellow and then every morning.

Reasons Your Orchids Stop Blooming

When orchids stop blooming, they enter the dormancy stage, where they rest and take time to replace the nutrients they dispensed during the blooming process. The dormancy stage lasts about six to nine months before your orchids bloom again.

When you see that your orchids are not back to blooming state after nine months, there might be something wrong. Here are the reasons why your orchids are not blooming:

  • Although orchids require indirect sunlight to grow, placing them on areas where they could not get the right amount of sunlight will not encourage them to bloom. If you’re growing orchids indoors, you need to check its location if it still gets the light it needs.
  • Conversely, be sure not to give them too much light. Orchids can get sunburned when placed in areas where there is too much sun.
  • The temperature where you grow your orchids matters as well. Orchids need to be in an environment of 65–75º F to bloom. Orchids cannot handle drastic weather changes like too much heat in the summer and too much cold in the spring and winter.
  • You also have to keep a close eye on your potting soil. If you plant your orchids in a sterile, inorganic potting mix, it’s not getting enough nutrients to grow.

How to Make Your Orchid Bloom Again

The environment that an orchid thrives in has a lot to do with its ability to reproduce. The environment can either kill or promote your orchid’s ability to reproduce. This is especially important to understand because if you want to make your orchid bloom again, it will be a much shorter time than if you just wanted to revive your orchid’s original color or vigor.

Check the Amount of Sunlight They Get

Orchids need indirect sunlight to grow. There are different indoor orchids you can have, and the location where you place them is critical in its regrowth.

Misting is important to orchids. That’s why keeping them away from direct light is critical. Misting the leaves misting with a hose will keep them moist and prevent the leaves from drying out. Watering in the afternoon after lunch can keep the leaves moist so that you can mist the next day again.

Water Them Properly

If you don’t provide your orchid with enough water, your plant will begin to experience wilting, which is why watering orchid plants is critical. To make your orchid bloom, you must supply your plant with enough water to drink and enough food so that your orchid can absorb the nutrients it needs to keep growing and replicating itself.

Check the Humidity of Their Environment

One of the best ways to learn how to take care of orchids effectively is by using a humidity meter. This is a great tool to have because it can monitor the humidity level in your orchid’s environment. This allows you to know when the water in the environment needs to change. The good thing about a humidity meter is that it can be used in a wide range of environments. With it, you can easily find out if it is too hot, too cold, or just right. By knowing this information, you will avoid having your orchids die due to the lack of moisture.

Consider the Use of Fertilizer

Fertilizers are good options to keep your garden healthy. Flower experts recommend fertilizing orchids once every week or at least once a month after the flower loses its bloom. This is to ensure that the orchids get the right nutrition to be able to bloom again.

Choose a fertilizer that contains equal parts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium and urea-free. Dilute the fertilizer by mixing it with an equal amount of water before applying it to your orchid.

Summary

So, whether you’re trying to grow an orchid for the first time or whether you’ve already grown one for many years and have trouble with it now, the first thing you must remember is that your orchid’s environment plays a major part in its health and success.
